Description

Two TLSs signed “Jackie” and “as always, Jackie,” both one page, 5.25 x 7.5, personal 1040 Fifth Avenue letterhead, October 13, 1972, and March 27, 1984, both addressed to noted textile designers Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett. The earlier letter: “Thanks so much for the really pretty scarves. That was so nice of you to think of Caroline and me. This is so hasty as I am running off to the country but I do hope to see you both soon.” The second letter: “I am so pleased you thought to send me one of your most effective posters. I can think of a number of people who might be interested in hanging it. It was a wonderful thing that you were doing. I wish you the best of luck.” Jackie adds the salutation in her own hand to the 1984 letter, which is in poor condition, with creasing and substantial tears (tears do not touch the signature); the 1972 letter is in fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes.

From the 1940s through the 1970s, Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett ran Tillett Textiles as a husband-and-wife team, designing and printing custom fabrics in their home studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They met in Mexico—Leslie, an artist, and D.D., a photojournalist for Harper’s Bazaar—and began producing hand-printed textiles known for their painterly quality and hands-on techniques. Their work quickly found an audience among leading tastemakers, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who commissioned their fabrics for the White House, as well as Bunny Mellon, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Harry S. Truman, and more.
