Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “D. D. Eisenhower,” one page,8 x 10.5, December 1, 1918. An “Honorable Discharge from the United States Army,” issued at Camp Dix, New Jersey, to Corporal Leo Mielziner, Jr. of Company “A,” 333rd Battalion, which certifies his “Honest and Faithful Service” and notes his discharge by authority of the Assistant Adjutant General following the conclusion of hostilities. The form includes detailed personal descriptors – birthplace (Canterbury, New Hampshire), occupation (bank clerk), and physical characteristics – and bears period stamps and notations, including a “Victory Button” issuance stamp dated July 27, 1919. Boldly signed at the conclusion by Dwight D. Eisenhower, then a 28-year-old Army officer at Camp Dix, years before his rise to Supreme Allied Commander in World War II and the presidency. In very good condition, with overall creasing, multiple intersecting folds, and toning to the top half of the reverse.

Dwight Eisenhower served stateside throughout World War I, holding key training and organizational posts that helped prepare the expanding U.S. Army for modern warfare. After joining the 19th Infantry at Fort Sam Houston in 1915, he was assigned to establish and oversee training programs following America’s entry into the war, including officer instruction posts and the Army’s early tank training efforts at Camp Meade. He later played a leading role in organizing and commanding the tank training center at Camp Colt near Gettysburg. After the armistice, Eisenhower was stationed at Camp Dix, New Jersey—where he signed discharge papers for returning soldiers—before continuing his service at Fort Benning and Camp Meade. A scarce and desirable early Eisenhower military signature, dating to the immediate aftermath of the first World War.
