The Grenoble 1968 Winter Olympics torch is one example of a historically significant piece that sold for a high price at $231,288. This torch was originally used by French wrestler Daniel Robin to light the Olympic cauldron at the closing ceremonies in Grenoble’s Le Stade de Glace on February 18, 1968. This torch was one of just 33 manufactured, and is fitted with rose-gold bronze alloy and a red felt-wrapped grip.

Along with a unique selection of torches, RR Auction has also specialized in centuries old Olympic medals. Take this 1906 Athens summer Olympics medal as one example. This particular medal depicts the Greek God Zeus holding the Greek Goddess of victory, Nike, in the palm of his hand. This uncommon piece also boasts a view of the Greek Acropolis and the Parthenon.

Fast forward to more recent Olympic history, Ryan Lochte’s 2008 bronze-and-jade medals took first place as our highest seller in our July 2022 Olympic memorabilia auction. Lochte is regarded as one of America’s legendary swimmers, and this is reflected in these medals. The medals are fitted with bronze and jade, symbols of nobility and virtue. Jade is also considered the embodiment of the Chinese traditional values of ethics and honor, making these ceremonial medals especially valuable.
