Union general (1833–1907) who led a brigade in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Two ALSs, totaling six pages on two sets of adjoining sheets, each signed “Thos. H. Ruger,” dated 1869 and 1878. First is a letter to his father, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, February 24, 1869, in part: “I am much disappointed that I cannot go to Washington…but as you have probably seen from the papers my regiment has been ordered to Texas. We go to the Rio Grande to relieve troops there…received last evening a telegram stating that my leave could not be granted as the regiment would be ordered to concentrate at once…I will write to Genl. Grant in such manner as to bring the matter to his personal attention.” The second is to Hon. Edward McPherson, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, May 20, 1878, in part: “The telegram should read ‘I did not decline to do this eventually but in the absence of any riot or physical conflict in the House did as I had (and Have) as to the authority of the Governor under the circumstances, to at once act in the premise…those present in the Democratic Party were those having certificates from the State Board of Canvassers as to whose right to place there is no question—I took time to consider.’ The dispatch was hurriedly written but is if somewhat elliptical, intelligible.” Partial separations to mailing folds of the first letter, otherwise overall fine condition.
