Description

ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, March 21, 1867. Addressed from Concord, New Hampshire, a handwritten letter to his nephew, Dr. Charles A. Packard, in full: “I have not been able earlier to answer your letter of the 8th inst. and am still far from strong. If I have met Mayor Hoffman at all our acquaintance was but slight – too slight perhaps to make it proper for me to send him a note of introduction. I have therefore written the enclosed note to Mr. Webster who has earned a high reputation in New York doubtless knows Mayor Hoffman well and who will, I am sure, be glad to render you any aid he can in consummation of the arrangement you suggest.” Pierce adds a postscript: “Acknowledge reception and let me know what seem to be your prospects.” In very fine condition.
