Description

President Franklin Pierce introduces Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Braxton Bragg, “a gentleman whom you already know so well by reputation”

LS as president, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, June 23, 1855. Addressed from Washington and penned in the hand of Pierce’s personal secretary, Sidney Webster, a handwritten letter of introduction to Boston Post editor Charles G. Greene, in full: “I think it will give you pleasure to make the personal acquaintance of the bearer, Bt. Lt. Col. Bragg of the U. S. Army, – a gentleman whom you already know so well by reputation. Col. B— is on his way to Exeter N.H. to visit his brother in law now at the Academy in that place, and should he remain in Boston for any time I commend him to your kind attention.” In fine condition.

Written during Franklin Pierce’s presidency, this letter introduces Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Braxton Bragg of the U.S. Army to Charles G. Greene, editor and proprietor of the influential Boston Post. Bragg had earned national distinction for his service in the Mexican-American War and was among the army’s most respected officers. Just six months after this letter, Bragg resigned from the U.S. Army, became a Louisiana sugar planter, and later joined the Confederacy, rising to full general and commanding the Army of Tennessee. An appealing association linking a sitting president, a celebrated Mexican War officer, a future Confederate commander, and one of New England’s most prominent Democratic newspaper editors.
