German-American lawyer, pharmacist, and bootlegger (1878–1952) who became known as 'King of the Bootleggers' during the early days of Prohibition; he murdered his second wife in 1927 and was acquitted in a jury trial after pleading transitory insanity. Partly-printed DS, endorsed on the reverse, “George Remus,” one page, 8.25 x 3.5, November 21, 1916. Promissory note signed by Joseph H. McKee, in part: "Ninety Days after date for value received I promise to Pay to the order of myself Two Hundred and 00/1000 Dollars at Chicago, Illinois, with interest at 6 per cent per annum." Signed on the reverse in ink by Joseph H. McKee and George Remus. In fine condition, with some brushing to ink and one small edge tear.
