Midwestern armed robber and contract killer during the Prohibition era (1893-1940) who is considered a prime suspect in the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929. Original 8.25 x 15.5 reward poster for Fred ‘Killer’ Burke, issued by the City of St. Joseph, Michigan, on December 15, 1929, offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction in the murder of Police Officer Charles Skelley. The poster features Burke's fingerprints and multiple mugshots and provides a physical description, numerous aliases, and a summary of the circumstances surrounding Skelley's murder during a traffic stop. The lower portion identifies several of Burke's known associates, including Gus Winkler, Fred Goetz, and John Conley, and bears the printed names of Mayor T. G. Yeomans, City Clerk James R. Stone, St. Joseph Chief of Police Fred Alden, and Berrien County Sheriff Fred G. Bryant. In very good to fine condition, with some minor paper loss to the top edge. Issued during the nationwide manhunt for one of the Prohibition era's most notorious gunmen, this rare reward poster predates Burke's 1931 arrest and remains closely tied to the investigation that ultimately linked him to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
