Civil War-dated ANS signed “R. B. Hayes, Brig. Genl,” one page, 7.75 x 4, March 29, 1865. Short handwritten note addressed from "Camp Hastings," in full: "I have the honor to be, respectfully your obed't servant." In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
Hayes wrote this note from Camp Hastings, his winter headquarters near Cumberland, Maryland, which he had named for his wounded adjutant, Captain Russell Hastings. A veteran Union officer of the 23rd Ohio Infantry, Hayes had been promoted to brigadier general in October 1864 for gallantry and distinguished service in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and, just sixteen days before this letter, was brevetted major general. Written in the closing days of the Civil War, the note dates to just eleven days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
