Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.5, July 8, 1882. President Arthur appoints Joshua A. Fessenden as "Captain in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Chester A. Arthur, and countersigned by Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln. The navy blue seal affixed at the upper left remains fully intact. In fine condition, with light soiling and a bit of paper loss to storage folds.
Joshua A. Fessenden (1841–1908) served as captain in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery. He enlisted in the 1st Maine Cavalry on October 19, 1861, as a sergeant, and would later be wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was also the nephew of Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury William P. Fessenden.
