ALS signed “Bened't Arnold,” one page, 7.5 x 5, no date but circa early 1760s. Handwritten letter to Silas Marsh, in part: "Please to Pay the above Sum of Ten Pounds & Nine pence Lawfull Money to Doct'r Samuel Cooke & his receit shall be a full Discharge from me From the Note & all Accounts." Corner-mounted, cloth-matted, and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 28.25 x 19.5. Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition, with light soiling.
Silas Marsh (1740–1790), a native of Lebanon, Connecticut, graduated from Yale in 1764 and became a lawyer. He later moved from Sharon, Connecticut, to nearby Amenia, New York, and was an active Patriot during the Revolutionary War. Dr. Samuel Cooke (1738–1783), originally of New Haven, likewise settled in New York, moving to Poughkeepsie and serving as a surgeon during the war.
Arnold had moved from Norwich to New Haven in 1761, establishing a successful shop near Yale College that sold books, medicines, and jewelry. This early commercial letter dates from well before his celebrated military career and eventual betrayal of the American cause.
