On May 2, 1957, Frank Costello narrowly survived an assassination attempt outside his Manhattan apartment building after being shot in the head by a gunman acting on behalf of Vito Genovese. More than three months later, Vincent Gigante surrendered to authorities and was arrested in connection with the shooting before being released on $100,000 bond in September 1957, as pictured here. At trial in 1958, Costello refused to identify Gigante as his assailant, and Gigante was acquitted for lack of evidence. Costello soon retired, allowing Vito Genovese to consolidate control of the crime family that later bore his name.
