Description

Four original glossy 4.5 x 3 Indiana State Prison mugshot photographs of Dillinger Gang associates Edward ‘Ed’ Willis Shouse (inmate no. 13915), Joseph Burns (real name John C. Heaps, inmate no. 8703), Walter Detrich (inmate no. 14351), and James Clark (inmate no. 14352), each showing profile and frontal views. In overall very good to fine condition, with scattered creasing, paperclip impressions, surface wear, and a tear to the top edge of the Shouse photo.

The identification of each mug shot is corroborated by the Indiana Archives and Records Administration's Dillinger Collection, which lists the corresponding Indiana State Prison inmate numbers visible in the photographs. Although lesser known of the Dillinger associates, all four men were among the ten inmates who escaped the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City on September 26, 1933, using firearms that Dillinger – free on parole at the time – had smuggled into the prison. The daring breakout reunited Dillinger with many of his former cellmates and marked the beginning of the gang's infamous crime spree across the Midwest.
