American impostor (1921–1982) who impersonated a civil engineer, a sheriff's deputy, an assistant prison warden, a doctor of applied psychology, a hospital orderly, a lawyer, a child-care expert, a Benedictine monk, a Trappist monk, a naval surgeon, an editor, a cancer researcher, and a teacher; his exploits inspired the 1961 movie The Great Impostor, in which he was played by Tony Curtis. Signed book: Handbook of the Hospital Corps, United States Navy, 1939. Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1939. Hardcover, 6 x 9.25, 1015 pages. Signed on a rear endpaper in fountain pen, "F. W. Demara," alongside several colleagues. In very good to fine condition, with a cracked front hinge, sunning to spine, and foxing and toning to endpapers. Consignor notes that his grandfather was enrolled in the US Navy Hospital Corps School at the Norfolk Naval Hospital at the same time as Demara.
