Autograph manuscript signed “John Kennedy,” comprised of a four-page handwritten English composition written by Kennedy as a student at the Collegiate School in New York City, circa 1974-1975. The essay, penned in blue ink on 8.5 x 11 notebook paper, is signed at the top of the first page by a 14 or 15-year-old Kennedy, and titled, "Romeo + Juliet." He begins: "Of all the many well developed characters in Romeo and Juliet I think the character of the nurse is most familiar to me. When I was small, I had a governess named Maud Shaw. She was an 'English nanny.' Miss Shaw was very much like the nurse in more than one way. She was always very protective over me. In all my years with her (1–7), I never think I stayed farther than 6 feet away from her at any time. If I ever dared to I would probably get spanked, Miss Shaw was very persuasive when she wanted to be…As I said before she was brought up very strongly in the English nanny tradition if you know what I mean.
She was very active in the way I was brought up, discussing with my mother what was best for me much like the nurse in the play. Some things she did weren't the best things to do, but she had good intentions, much like the nurse in the play. For instance, she decided that I should go to school a year later than I did, but my parents overruled her on that one.
After this she felt very offended and suplanted. She often felt this was when her decisions or desires were not followed up. I dont know if it was the same in the play because the character wasn't exposed that much…Another thing that she did that was like the nurse in the play was that she loved to tease. Many times it would be in jest but others it would be maliciously…Often when her decisions were not followed up she would begin to be mean and obnoxious…It is fairly to tie her in with the nurse in the play, they both had the same backgrounds and same surroundings and much the same personalities, even though they were two hundred years apart." The last page is a draft of the essay's final page, which he re-wrote to incorporate some of the teacher's suggestions. All four pages bear red ink correction marks from his teacher, who gave Kennedy a score of 72. In fine condition, with light wear and wrinkling.
