Description

President Theodore Roosevelt signs an oversized July 1900 George Prince campaign-era portrait during his first months in the White House

Extraordinary oversized matte-finish 16.5 x 20.5 portrait of New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt by photographer George Prince, depicting Roosevelt in formal attire with pince-nez spectacles and his distinctive mustache, prominently signed on the original studio mount in ink as American president, “Theodore Roosevelt, Dec. 7th 1901.” Photographer's credit reads, “Prince Foto – Washington, D.C.," with the lower left of the image bearing a copyright date of 1900 by George Prince. Impressively mounted and displayed in a period wood frame to an overall size of 34.25 x 38.75. In fine condition, with a bit of dampstaining along the extreme left edge of the mount.

Signed on December 7, 1901, less than three months after Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency following the assassination of William McKinley, this portrait bears an early presidential-era signature on a photograph originally taken by Washington photographer George Prince in July 1900. At the time the portrait was made, Roosevelt was serving as Governor of New York and had only recently secured the Republican nomination for vice president at the party's national convention in Philadelphia, joining McKinley on the ticket for the 1900 election. The combination of a campaign-era portrait and a boldly dated signature from Roosevelt's first months as president links two pivotal moments in his rapid ascent from state office to the nation's highest post.
