Description

"Stanley, with bone"—original artwork by David Hockney, portraying his beloved dachshund

Signed book: David Hockney's Dog Days. First edition. London: Thames and Hudson, 1998. Hardcover with dust jacket, 9.5 x 8.25, 80 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in black felt tip, "For Jason, much love, David H.," adding a wonderful, detailed sketch of one of his dogs: "Stanley, with bone." He also sketches cards around the inscription and signature, adding an artistic depth to his autograph. In fine condition.

Hockney’s beloved dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie, became among the most recognizable subjects of his late-20th-century work, inspiring a warm and intimate series of drawings and paintings that celebrated the quiet companionship of domestic life. This charming presentation copy is especially desirable for Hockney’s highly personal added sketch: rather than a quick flourish, he transforms the half-title into an original illustrated dedication, complete with affectionate inscriptions, playful graphic framing, and a named portrait of “Stanley, with bone.” A delightful association of book, subject, and original art by one of Britain’s most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
