Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in ink by Theodore Roosevelt, "General N. M. Curtis, Assembly Chamber, Albany, Compliments of the author." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG-/None, with edgewear, bumped corners, chipping at the spine's head, and a small split toward the binding at the top of the signed page.
Theodore Roosevelt was a prolific author and, in fact, first came to national prominence as a serious historian with this seminal work, The Naval War of 1812, first published in 1882. The book reflects his lifelong belief in naval strength, national vigor, and American military preparedness, and aided in his political ascent: he would be named Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897.
The recipient, General Newton M. Curtis (1835–1910), was a prominent Union Civil War general (awarded the Medal of Honor for Fort Fisher), who later served as a New York State Assemblyman representing St. Lawrence County, and later served in the House of Representatives. He also wrote a book entitled From Bull Run to Chancellorsville, published in 1906.
