Description

World War II-dated TLS signed “G. S. Patton, Jr.,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, Headquarters, Third United States Army, Office of the Commanding General (APO 403) letterhead, November 1, 1944. Letter to Alison Greenwood, in full: "I am sending you my signature to this letter as the autograph you requested." Triple-matted with a photo to an overall size of 18.5 x 15.5. In very good condition, with overall light creasing, and a small tear to the lower blank area.

At the time of signing, the Third Army was engaged in the Battle of Metz, a punishing campaign against one of Europe's most heavily fortified cities, defended by a network of 43 interlinked forts spanning some 25 miles. The assault had begun on October 12th, and Metz would not fall until November 22nd. Against this backdrop of intense combat in the Lorraine region, Patton paused to fulfill a simple autograph request, signing this characteristically terse reply with the same bold hand then directing Third Army operations in France.
