Description

Bold ink signature, "Z. Taylor, Bt. Br. Genl., U.S.A.," on an off-white 3.5 x 2 sheet clipped from a military document with printed text, "Commanding the Department," and a partial secretarial docketing dated December 25, 1845. In fine condition.

Zachary Taylor signed this document fragment while serving as a brevet brigadier general in the U.S. Army, three years before his election as the twelfth president of the United States. In 1845, Taylor commanded American forces in Texas amid escalating tensions between the United States and Mexico that would soon erupt into the Mexican-American War. His victories at Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey, and Buena Vista transformed the career military officer into a national hero and propelled him to the presidency in 1848. Taylor served as president until his death in office in July 1850.
