Description

Future President Zachary Taylor addresses the disposition of rejected recruits while commanding frontier forces at Fort Crawford

LS signed “Z. Taylor, Col., 1st Regt U.S. Infy, Comdg,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 14, 1833. Addressed from “Head Qrs., 1st Infantry, Fort Crawford,” a letter to Col. R. Jones in Washington, in full: “Your communication of the 17th ult., acknowledging the receipt of the Report of the Board of Inspectors mustering Roll etc, of Recruits, recently arrived at this Post has this moment come to hand; that of the 10th of the same month has not yet been received. Upon referring to the orders from your Office on the subject of Rejected Recruits, it appears that I am not authorized to discharge recruits of my command who may have been rejected by a Board of Inspectors. I have therefore retained Kavenaugh, Foster, and Williams (recruits of the 7th conscription) at this Post until the decision of the Genl. in Chief, in regard to them be made known.” In fine condition, with faint mottled staining.

Written from Fort Crawford during Zachary Taylor's service as commander of the 1st U.S. Infantry, this letter concerns the disposition of recruits rejected by a board of inspectors. Stationed on the northwestern frontier in the aftermath of the Black Hawk War, Taylor was then engaged in the administrative and disciplinary duties that occupied much of his long military career before his victories in the Mexican-American War transformed him into a national hero and, ultimately, the 12th president of the United States. Fort Crawford was also the setting for a significant episode in Taylor's personal life: Lieutenant Jefferson Davis was stationed there during this period and was then courting Taylor's daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor, a relationship the future president strongly opposed. An appealing frontier-era military letter from a formative period in Taylor's life and career.
