TLS signed “Thomas A. Edison,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal 'From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison' letterhead, February 23, 1912. Letter to J. A. Lighthipe of the Southern California Edison Co., in full: “Allow me to thank you for your kind remembrance of my birthday, and to express my sincere appreciation of the good wishes and congratulations extended by you on that occasion.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing, creasing, and file holes along the left edge.
Thomas Edison had celebrated his 65th birthday just twelve days before writing this letter, thanking electrical engineer James A. Lighthipe for remembering the occasion. By 1912, Lighthipe was employed by the Southern California Edison Company, one of the nation's largest electric utilities, organized in 1909 to serve the rapidly growing communities of Southern California. Earlier in his career, Lighthipe worked for Edison General Electric and General Electric in San Francisco, where he supervised the installation of an illuminating plant for California's Lick Observatory and participated in the expansion of electric lighting systems on the West Coast. The cordial exchange reflects Edison's enduring professional relationships with fellow electrical pioneers whose careers developed alongside the industry he helped create.
