Description

ALS as an Ohio congressman, signed “Wm. McKinley, Jr.,” one page, 5.25 x 8.75, House of Representatives letterhead, September 1887. Handwritten letter to Dr. William Bigham, in full: “I have been absent from the State for the month just past and therefore my failure to reply to your favor earlier. I will be very glad to speak at Camp Chippewa to the Republicans of the two counties, and I wish you would so say to the Republicans State Committee, which has control of my time. Please let me know what day.” In very fine condition.

Camp Chippewa, a resort area at Chippewa Lake in Medina County, was a popular convention center for Northeastern Ohio. McKinley spoke there for two hours on October 1, 1887, and, according to local newspaper accounts, delivered 'a masterly address, exciting the highest degree of enthusiasm in the audience.' His topics included the tariff, public spending, immigration, and 'the inconsistency and incompetence of the Democratic Party in power.' McKinley was 'greeted with frequent bursts of applause and was cheered for five minutes at the close.'
