Description

LS as president signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 7.75 x 10.25, Executive Mansion letterhead, June 15, 1892. Letter to Samuel C. Wright of Boston, Massachusetts, in full: “I beg to express to you my thanks for your kind invitation to meet the comrades of the old 29th Massachusetts Association on the 17th inst. and my regrets that it will be impossible for me to accept.” In fine condition, with faint toning from prior display.

Written during the final year of Benjamin Harrison’s presidency, this letter declines an invitation to meet members of the 29th Massachusetts Association, a Civil War veterans’ organization. Harrison himself was a Union Army veteran who served with distinction during the Civil War and later rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general. Penned just days after Harrison secured renomination at the 1892 Republican National Convention, the note dates from the opening months of his campaign for a second term. Harrison would ultimately lose the election to Grover Cleveland in November 1892, marking the end of his presidency and Cleveland’s return to the White House.
