Description

ALS as president signed “R. B. Hayes,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.75, Executive Mansion letterhead, March 2, 1881. Handwritten letter marked “Private,” addressed to “Mrs. M. De Etta Lincoln,” in part: “Mrs. Hayes has just forwarded me your letter to her of the 28th ult. It has surprised…her. It is totally without foundation in any intentional act of her or of any member of our family. She had nothing whatever to do with the invitations to the Diplomatic, and neither she nor I dreamed that you were in any danger of being omitted. Of course you were one of those we suppose we should see. I assure you there is…No persecution against you, but the opposite. You ought to have been invited. I am sorry you were not. You ought to have come to me about it, and you found you were omitted…In short, there is nothing, nothing in the whole affair except accident, which we regret.” In fine condition, with a tiny chip to the top edge of the first page. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
