Description

“To Max, with appreciation, L.B.J.”—Lyndon B. Johnson presents a photograph of General Maxwell D. Taylor, his trusted military adviser and ambassador to South Vietnam

Vintage semi-glossy 10.5 x 13.5 silver gelatin photograph of General Maxwell D. Taylor speaking from a podium bearing the presidential seal before an audience in a White House ceremonial room, signed and inscribed in felt tip in the lower border, “To Max, with appreciation, L.B.J.” Framed to an overall size of 12.25 x 15.25. A label on the reverse of the frame is dated October 5, 1965, placing the presentation shortly after Taylor's return from service as U.S. ambassador to South Vietnam. In very fine condition.

A highly personal presentation photograph from President Lyndon B. Johnson to General Maxwell D. Taylor (1901–1987), one of the most influential military leaders of the Cold War era. Taylor served as Army Chief of Staff under Eisenhower, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Kennedy, and later as U.S. ambassador to South Vietnam during the critical early years of Johnson's escalation of the Vietnam War. A notable piece linking two central figures in the shaping of U.S. strategy during the Cold War and Vietnam era.
