Description

Two items:

- TLS as president, signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, July 13, 1944. FDR writes to Jan Ciechanowski, Ambassador of Poland, in full: "I have received your recent letter with which you have very kindly sent me a photograph of Premier Mikolajczyk. The picture of the Prime Minister will serve as a permanent reminder of a most interesting visit, as well as of a new friendship which has already given me much satisfaction."

- Vintage matte-finish 8.75 x 11 portrait of Stanisław Mikołajczyk, prime minister of the Polish government-in-exile during World War II, by Yousuf Karsh, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen in Polish by Mikołajczyk, and also signed in pencil by Karsh. Reverse bears "Copyright Karsh Ottawa" and "Dec 24 1944" stamps.

In overall fine condition.

A unique lot linking the photograph, its diplomatic context, and U.S.-Polish relations during the critical final phase of World War II when Poland's future government was under intense Allied and Soviet negotiation; an exceptional Polish-American historical pairing from the era of the Polish government-in-exile.
