Description

American government official, businessman, and naval officer (1896-1974) who played a key role in U.S. nuclear policy. A founding member of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1946 and its chairman in the 1950s, he was influential in the development of nuclear weapons and energy. He also drove the 1954 security hearing that led to J. Robert Oppenheimer losing his clearance. TLS signed “Lewis L. Strauss,” one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, November 8, 1972. Letter to Kenneth Geshart, in full: “Ordinarily I do not accommodate autograph seekers who impose on my time and postage, but you state that you are just starting an autograph collection and I might be doing you a kindness to suggest that you will be more likely to succeed if you will accompany your requests with an addressed return envelope bearing postage.” Double-matted with a portrait photo to an overall size of 19.75 x 13.5. In very good to fine condition, with a light diagonal crease in the lower blank area, and warping to the mat.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
