Description

"He informs Us that the British Queen has passed away at the 1st day of this month and that at the same day the Hanover Elector was proclaimed a King"

Peter the Great (1672–1725), the towering Tsar and first Emperor of Russia, transformed his vast realm into a formidable European power through sweeping military, naval, and cultural reforms that left an indelible mark on world history. Significant LS in Cyrillic, signed “Peter,” one page, 6.25 x 7.75, August 28, 1714. Letter to the General Prince Golitzin, in full (translated): "A courier from Peter Apraksin delivered the news that the demarcation with the Turks is completed now. Thank God for that, considering the situation. The courier delivered also letters from the Baron Shaka who is at the British Court. He informs Us that the British Queen has passed away at the 1st day of this month and that at the same day the Hanover Elector was proclaimed a King. We hope to reach the Birch Islands today and to bring the captured ships with us there." In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining, soiling, and toning.

Peter the Great writes during a moment of triumph and transition, in the aftermath of Russia’s landmark naval victory over Sweden at Gangut in July 1714. The tsar reports on the movement of captured ships toward the Birch Islands while also acknowledging two major diplomatic developments—the completed demarcation with the Ottoman Turks following the dangerous Pruth campaign settlement, and the death of Queen Anne of Great Britain on August 1, 1714, which brought the Hanoverian Elector George I to the throne. The reflects Peter’s sweeping geopolitical concerns at the height of the Great Northern War, balancing Baltic military success, Ottoman border security, and the shifting dynastic politics of Western Europe.
