Description

Monarch of the Second Mexican Empire (1832–1867) who was overthrown by Republican forces and executed by firing squad on June 19, 1867. Manuscript DS, in Spanish, signed “Maximilian,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, November 9, 1865. Decree of promotion, in part (translated): "In consideration of the merit and circumstances pertaining to Don Enrique, Count of Chateaubriand, third-class secretary of the French Legation in Algeria, We have seen fit to grant him the Cross of Officer of the Imperial Order of Guadalupe." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Maximilian I of Mexico. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and loss to the lower right corner.
