Description

"Right now my life is very hectic since I just returned from England and am trying to devote as much time as possible to my work at Viking"

TLS signed “Best, Jackie,” one page, 5 x 7.5, personal 1040 Fifth Avenue letterhead, October 21, 1975. Letter to noted textile designer Leslie Tillett, in full: “How very thoughtful of you to send me a copy of ‘American Needlework’ and it is my hope that it will be a tremendous success. I know how much time and research you gave to this project and you must be very pleased by the final result. It is nice of you to offer to take me to the exhibit at Bonwit Teller, however, right now my life is very hectic since I just returned from England and am trying to devote as much time as possible to my work at Viking. If I do find I have a free moment, you can be certain that I will call you. And, as far as your book, ‘The Chinese Influence’ is concerned, I will take it to my office and be in touch with you as soon as possible. Thank you again for remembering me.” Jackie adds the salutation in her own hand. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

From the 1940s through the 1970s, Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett ran Tillett Textiles as a husband-and-wife team, designing and printing custom fabrics in their home studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They met in Mexico—Leslie, an artist, and D.D., a photojournalist for Harper’s Bazaar—and began producing hand-printed textiles known for their painterly quality and hands-on techniques. Their work quickly found an audience among leading tastemakers, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who commissioned their fabrics for the White House, as well as Bunny Mellon, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Harry S. Truman, and more.
