Description

"You would have been wiser to hold it under the auspices of the Free Trade League"

ALS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 5 x 8, 105 Mount Street letterhead, October 6, 1904. Handwritten letter to "Mr. Crawshaye Williams," in part: "You are quite right to proceed with your arrangements for the meeting in your constituency on Dec. 7. I think you would have been wiser to hold it under the auspices of the Free Trade League. All your Liberals could have attended too—but I am personally quite agreeable to either course." Mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 8.75 x 12.75. In fine condition. The letter's reference to the Free Trade League speaks directly to the defining political battle of Churchill's early career, as he broke with his own Conservative Party over Joseph Chamberlain's protectionist tariff reform campaign, staking his political future on the free trade cause.
