Description

"Nelson of the Nile" takes his seat in the House of Lords

ALS signed “Nelson of the Nile,” one page, 7.25 x 9, postmarked November 17, 1800. Handwritten letter to Sir Isaac Heard, in full: "On Thursday next Lord Grenville is to attend me to the House in order to take my seat, therefore I place myself under your guidance." Addressed on the integral leaf in Nelson's own hand, adding his franking signature: "Nelson of the Nile." In fine condition, with a thin mounting strip along the left edge.

After defeating the French at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, Horatio Nelson was raised to the Peerage of Great Britain on November 6, 1798 as Baron Nelson of the Nile, and his signature in that format is quite scarce.
