Description

Indigenous Mexican statesman (1806-1872) who served as the country's president from 1858 until his death. Partly-printed DS in Spanish, one page, 11.25 x 16.75, June 22, 1870. Military commission approved by Mexican President Benito Juárez, who, in “recognition of the merit and services of Citizen Joaquin Pavia, 2nd Captain of the Permanent Artillery,” confers upon him the rank of “1st Captain of the 3rd Battery of the 2nd Artillery Brigade.” Signed below by Juárez. The upper left retains the majority of its original white-and-blue flower seal. In very good condition, with paper loss and repaired tears, one of which touches Juarez's paraph.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
