During WWII, he advanced several peace proposals, did much to aid war victims, and, following the war, maintained a staunch anti-Communist stand. TLS in Italian, signed “E. Card. Pacelli,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Secretariat of State of His Holiness letterhead, May 11, 1931. Addressed from the Vatican, a letter to Giovanni Cazzani, the Bishop of Cremona, in full (translated): "In response to your esteemed letter of 29 April last concerning the commemorations of the centenary of the birth of Monsignor Bonomelli, I hasten to inform Your Most Reverend Excellency that the initiative proposed by Your Excellency—to hold, this coming November, a modest and religious diocesan commemoration of the meritorious Bishop—is appropriate, provided that it remains within proper limits. As for the other committee that is being formed for a commemoration of a national character, you may reply, if necessary, that you are not in a position to engage with it, since the said committee has no relation with the ecclesiastical authority."
