Description

Pope, born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti (1857–1939), who reigned from 1922 until his death and issued encyclicals condemning communism, fascism, and racism. ALS in Italian, signed “A. Ratti,” one page, 3.5 x 5.5, Ambrosiana postal card, December 19, 1908. Addressed from Milan, an untranslated handwritten letter from Ratti as Chief of the Ambrosian Library, discussing a recently received volume, offering a measured but critical assessment—remarking on its uneven development, the author’s haste, and certain flaws in execution—while noting that he has not yet had sufficient opportunity to fully evaluate its usefulness. In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
