Description

TLS signed “Yours sincerely, N. Chamberlain,” one page, 8 x 10, 37 Eaton Square letterhead, November 5, 1934. Letter to Ava Wigram, written while serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Stanley Baldwin, during a period of economic recovery and growing concern over European instability. In full: “Yes, I do know your French saying, and also another one which seems appropriate – ‘Qui s’explique se complique.’ ['The more you explain, the more you complicate things'] We both enjoyed our luncheon in your charming little house, and I was glad to have an opportunity of seeing the Ambassador again.” Chamberlain adds the salutation in his own hand. In fine condition, with faint toning to the upper left quadrant.

Ava Anderson, Viscountess Waverley (née Bodley; formerly Wigram, 1895-1974), was a prominent English political hostess central to government circles during World War II, noted by Winston Churchill for her 'contact with gt: affairs.' She was first married to Foreign Office official Ralph Follett Wigram (1890–1936), later described by Churchill as a 'great unsung hero' for exposing German rearmament, and subsequently to John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley, a senior War Cabinet member and Home Secretary for whom the Anderson air-raid shelters are named.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
