Description

British politician (1869–1940) who served as prime minister from 1937 to 1940, and is remembered for his foreign policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany; by signing the Munich Agreement in 1938, he allowed Hitler to annex Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland in what is now recognized as one of the major early steps toward World War II. Vintage matte-finish 7 x 8.75 photo of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in a suit and tie, affixed to its original 10 x 12.5 mount, signed and inscribed on the mount in fountain pen, "To Miss Lamont, with grateful recollections of her care and attention, Neville Chamberlain, June 1940,” shortly after his resignation as prime minister on May 10, 1940. Accompanied by an unmounted 7 x 9 example of the same portrait, signed on the reverse in fountain pen by his wife, "Taken at 10 Downing St. on March 10th 1938, Anne Chamberlain," identifying the date and location of the original sitting. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining, and a small area of border surface loss, to the Neville-signed portrait.
