Description

"I've got good news. They put up the list of the men that are shipping out, and I'm not going with this bunch, that means that I'll be able to get my furlough next month"

United States Marine Corps corporal (1925–1979) who participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He is generally (but incorrectly) remembered as one of the six flag-raisers who helped raise the second U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. World War II-dated ALS signed “Rene,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.5, February 12, 1944. Addressed from Charleston, South Carolina, a handwritten letter from Gagnon as a Private First Class in the U.S. Marine Corps, sent to his hometown sweetheart, Pauline Harnois, whom he would marry upon his return from the war. In part: “I've got good news. They put up the list of the men that are shipping out, and I'm not going with this bunch, that means that I'll be able to get my furlough next month. Boy I just can't imagine how nice it will be to get back to you, even if it's only for a few days. We'll make them count for years. I just can't wait to get back for good, and the way things are going now it won't be long darling." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope, with Gagnon incorporating his signature into the return address field, "P.F.C. R. A. Gagnon, U.S.M.C."

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
