American soldier (1923–1955) who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, best known as one of the six men who appeared in the iconic photograph 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima' by photographer Joe Rosenthal. Hand-addressed and signed mailing envelope, 9.5 x 4, addressed by Hayes to "D. Marino, 3620 Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles, 41, California," and signed as part of the return address, "Mr. Ira H. Hayes, P.O. Box 906, Bapchule, Arizona." Postmarked in October 1946. In fine condition.
