Description

Early French aviator and a fighter pilot (1888–1918) during World War I. A tennis center was named after him in the 1920s, the Stade de Roland Garros, the stadium that accommodates the French Open tournament, which is officially called Les internationaux de France de Roland-Garros (the 'French Internationals of Roland Garros'). ALS in French, signed “Garros,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.25 x 8, no date. Handwritten letter to a friend, in part (translated): "Thank you for your kind 'paper' of those days here (that I had not known until yesterday—excuse me); thanks above all for your little note; I have been, believe it, extremely touched. It is useless to tell you that I have not embarked unconsciously; that your friendship, that is infinitely precious to me, only gives me credit for some days and you know my reasons." Garros adds a postscript: "I have been stopped this morning by the poor weather reports; I ask a favor of you not to make known my projects." In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
