Description

Section of brown fabric, measuring 4.5˝ x 2.5˝, attributed to the tail section of the German airship Graf Zeppelin (LZ-127), recovered after its first transatlantic flight in October 1928. Includes a handwritten provenance note from the period, in full: "This is the material of which most of the Zeppelin is made of and this is one of the pieces which came off of the wrecked fin. So I ask you again to take care of it which I know you will. It's allright to show it to the boys, but don't cut any of it off." Framed to an overall size of 11.25 x 9.25. In fine condition, with damage to the provenance note.

On October 15, 1928, the New York Times reported: "Silently and with less commotion than if it had been a Sound steamer, the Graf Zeppelin, first ocean air liner, slid low over a murky horizon here this evening, and settled down to earth…as the eye followed the outline of the 755-foot gas bag to its stern, one noted marks left by the elements in the Graf Zeppelin's victorious tussle with storms over the Atlantic. Instead of a solid stabilizer or fin the sky showed through a framework from which the wind had ripped its covering."
