Description

French Revolutionary general (1753-1800) who was left in command of the French forces in Egypt when Napoleon returned to Paris; he was assassinated by a student in Cairo on June 14, 1800. Manuscript DS in French, signed at the conclusion by “Kleber” as general of division, one page, 7.75 x 13, October 31, 1793 (Year II of the French Republic). Official Army of the West document headed “Liberté, Égalité,” issued from the “État-major de l’avant-garde” (Headquarters of the Advance Guard), detailing and receipting pay owed to “citoyen Faivre,” identified as both adjutant-general and sergeant-major. The first portion itemizes compensation “depuis le 1er 8bre” (from October 1), including: “Comme chef de bataillon – 350 [livres]; Supplément de campagne – 116 livres 13 sols 4 deniers; Comme adjudant-général – 140,” totaling “616 livres 13 sols 4 deniers.” Endorsed at the conclusion by Jean-Baptiste Kleber and countersigned by Faivre. In fine condition.

Jean-Baptiste Kléber (1753–1800), a prominent general of the French Revolutionary Wars and later a key commander under Napoleon in Egypt, signs here during his service with the Army of the West amid the Vendée campaigns. Documents from this early phase of his career are uncommon, and this example offers a clear view of the financial administration of the Revolutionary army.
