One of Napoleon's favorite marshals (1753–1815) who served as his chief of staff from the start of his first Italian campaign in 1796 until his first abdication in 1814. LS in French, signed “Alexandre,” one page, 8 x 10, October 27, 1812. Wartime order to Marshal François-Joseph Lefebvre, the famed Duke of Danzig, hero of the 1807 siege that earned him his title, issued at Borovsk, Russia. Written during the disastrous retreat from Russia, the letter directs Lefebvre to place the Guard artillery in motion at 3 a.m. toward Nerev and to follow at 4 a.m. with his infantry, illustrating Berthier's unmatched ability to translate Napoleon's strategic intentions into precise, urgent battlefield instructions. In fine condition.
