Army officer and police administrator (1895-1958) who served as the first superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. He is best known for his involvement in the Lindbergh kidnapping case. World War II-dated TLS, one page, 8.5 x 10.75, personal letterhead, February 12, 1945. Letter to Captain Kellogg Sloan, in part: “Yes we are over here in Persia and have been for about two and a half years and we find the work extremely interesting. We have been assigned the job of reorganizing the Gendarmerie and in view of the international importance of security at this crossroads of the world you can well realize that a good Gendarmerie is highly essential. Of course we have run into a number of difficulties, such as the language difficulties, the oriental customs and habits, local tradition and influences, extremes of every kind and international implications. Nevertheless, I feel that we are making some progress, even though it be very slow. Our Mission here is entirely a military mission and all of our personnel comes directly from the army. Under those circumstances it's impossible for us to consider anyone who is not in the active service.” In fine condition.
Schwarzkopf was inducted into federal service with the 44th Division in September 1940, briefly commanding the 57th Infantry Brigade in 1941 before being posted to Iran in 1942 through the efforts of Mohammad Vali Mirza Farman Farmaian and assigned to organize the Iranian national police after the British-Soviet intervention that made Iran an Allied protectorate. His recruits, the Gendarmerie, were active in suppressing the Soviet-inspired attempt to destabilize Iran by backing separatists in Azerbaijan and Mahabad. For his work in Iran, Schwarzkopf was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
