ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, January 21, 1881. Handwritten letter to "Miss Berdan," the daughter of marksman and rifle inventor Hiram Berdan, in part: "So beautiful a letter as you have just written me, will command an autograph, a photograph…anything I possess!…Do for my sake cherish the feeling of respect you express—hide away in the care of your heart…the stories I told you, whether true or fabulous is of little import, and when you in time are surrounded by young & loving faces tell them of the old man who labored and fought that they might live in Peace, who took you on his knee and told you stories to while away the tedium of the long journey." In very good to fine condition, with soiling, a strip of toning to the first page, and adhesive residue on the back of the last page. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
