Celebrated German writer, scientist, and philosopher (1749-1832) who takes a place among the central intellectual and artistic figures of his day. His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. Unusual LS in German, signed “Goethe,” one page, 8 x 13, June 5, 1782. Letter signed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his capacity as head of the Saxe-Weimar War Commission, denying the transfer of an inheritance. He addresses to the Council of the City of Weimar, concerning the property affairs of Johann Adam Höhne, who had deserted from the "Royal Prussian military service." Höhne had "properly petitioned for the release of his property and in doing so assured…that he intended to settle in these princely territories and henceforth prove himself a loyal subject. Accordingly, it has been resolved by the Princely War Commission that no claim shall be made on his property." In very good to fine condition, with small areas of edge loss, and moderately heavy toning from prior display. As head of the Saxe-Weimar War Commission, Goethe participated in the recruitment of mercenaries into the Prussian and British military during the American Revolution.
