Description

Exceptional vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 portrait photo of General Dwight D. Eisenhower by Yousuf Karsh, depicting him wearing his U.S. Army garrison cap with five-star insignia, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, “To Mike Elizalde – Philippine Ambassador to the U.S.A. – with best wishes from his old friend – Dwight D. Eisenhower.” Affixed to a same-size cardstock mount and in fine condition, with light toning, and some trivial staining, in the borders.

Joaquin Miguel 'Mike' Elizalde (1896–1965) was a Filipino businessman and diplomat who served as Resident Commissioner of the Philippines to the United States from 1938 until World War II. Appointed by President Manuel Quezon, he worked to safeguard the Philippine economy ahead of independence and advocated for Filipino laborers in America. During the war, he helped organize the Philippine government-in-exile in the United States and effectively managed its diplomatic presence in Washington. Following Philippine independence in 1946, he became the nation’s first ambassador to the United States, serving until his later years.
