Description

British physicist and chemist (1791-1867) best known for his development of the first dynamo and the discovery of electromagnetic induction. ALS signed “M. Faraday,” one page, 4.5 x 7, May 27, 1856. Addressed from the “Royal Institution,” a handwritten letter to “Pettigrew,” ostensibly British surgeon and Egyptologist Thomas Pettigrew, in full: “The lead from Leeves and from York contain no tin; — but that from Colchester does contain that metal though only in small quantity. Hoping that these results will be satisfactory & of use to you.” In fine condition, with slightly irregular faint toning.

Thomas Joseph Pettigrew (1791–1865), sometimes known as ‘Mummy’ Pettigrew, was a surgeon and antiquarian who became an expert on Ancient Egyptian mummies. He became well known in London social circles for his private parties in which he unrolled and autopsied mummies for the entertainment of his guests. Alongside scientist John Tatum, Pettigrew was one of the co-founders of the City Philosophical Society, of which Michael Faraday was also a member. Faraday would later conduct chemical analyses for Pettigrew on minerals and other materials found inside mummies.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
