Description

French physicist (1819–1868) best known for the invention of the Foucault pendulum, a device demonstrating the effect of the Earth's rotation; he also made an early measurement of the speed of light, discovered eddy currents, and is credited with naming the gyroscope. ALS in French, signed “L. Foucault,” one black-bordered page, 4.75 x 7.25, October 11, 1860. An untranslated handwritten letter addressed from Paris. In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
